The 154th Cogswell / Pelham Halifax Harbour Championship Race & Northwest Arm Regatta – September 30, 2012

The 154th edition of the Halifax Harbour Rowing Championship will take place on Halifax’s historic Northwest Arm on Sunday, September 30, 2012. This event was first held in 1858 after Halifax physician, Alderman and philanthropist, Dr. Charles Cogswell, donated four hundred dollars and a belt for an annual sculling (rowing) competition on the Halifax Harbour. In 1880, after winning the race three consecutive times, Warren Smith won and retained the belt. Today, winners of the Cogswell Championship Race receive a cheque and a silver Cogswell medal. Rowers who win the race three consecutive times receive the Cogswell medal made from Nova Scotia gold. Adam Bliss, Fredericton Rowing Club, last year’s Cogswell medal winner, will be looking to win again this year and put himself in a position to win the gold Cogwell medal in 2013.

The Pelham Championship Prize was established as an award for the top finisher of the opposite sex from the Cogswell Medal winner. The prize is named after local rowing champion Henry Pelham (1908-1978). This year’s prize has been generously donated by Halifax MLA Leonard Preyra.

The Championship races start at 7:30 am at the mouth of the Northwest Arm with rowers racing the 4.3 km course to the finish in front of the Halifax Rowing Club (St. Mary’s Boat Club). The Northwest Arm Regatta, starts at 8:30 am, with four flights of 1000 and 2000 metre races and competitors rowing in crews of 2, 4 and 8 rowers. There will also be an adaptive (paralympic) rowing race. Male and female rowers, ranging in age from 13 to over 60 years old, will be competing in this fun and exciting regatta.

Medals and awards will be presented by District 7 Councilor Sue Uteck at approximately 2:00 pm.
